We seek to engage professionals in academia, vendors, standards development organizations, government, and the technology organizations from both the public and private sectors. Our current focus is on the healthcare industry, however, as the health community catches up to other industries with its use of technology, we anticipate multiple cross industry opportunities to emerge as standards outside healthcare are embraced.

Interoperability Institutedevelops and operates Interoperability LandTM (IOL). IOL is positioned to become the premiere online community designed to facilitate multi-organization development, integration, acceptance, and usability of innovative technologies and open standards. Like a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, organizations can establish a persistent technology “sandbox” within IOL and engage in activities relying on synthetic data to validate conformance with standards and demonstrate interactions among services exposed as application programming interfaces. Underneath, IOL is a combination of synthetic and simulated data with rules engine and visualization mechanisms that that make it realistic enough to enable complex but repeatable integration of systems, services and content. The platform also leverages 3D-based content and the use of game metaphors to facilitate complex interactions, however, IOL is not a game and will employ a lightweight but multi-layered legal and governance frame work to ensure participants engage within the ecosystem with well understood protections that range from traditional open source models to customized contractual arrangements.
A second area of focus for achieving our vision that leverages the activities surrounding IOL is a formalized Interoperability Institute internship and mentorship program designed to provide continued professional development that formally links with academic programs to ensure internships result in real word and hands on experience. We will cycle academic, corporate, part time retired expertise through our ranks.
